On October 17, dagu glacier, glacial 17, two months of "cover the quilt" the experiment result: "cover with quilt son" area of ice melting speed decreased significantly, compared with not covered area of the ice, can reduce the thickness of the glaciers are melting reach 1 meter, a preliminary estimate, can reduce about 70% of their glaciers test effect is remarkable.
This is the first experiment in China to "apply geoengineering measures to slow down glacier melting", jointly conducted by the Dagu Glacier Scenic and Historic Interest Area Administration and the Cryosphere Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since August this year. The State Key Laboratory of Cryosphere Science of the Northwest Institute of Ecology, Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences has set up a 500-square-meter test site at an altitude of about 5,000 meters on Dagu Glacier No. 17, covering the ice with a layer of geotextile with a thickness of 5 or 8 millimeters, as if covering the glacier with a quilt.Experimental results show that this method can effectively slow the melting of glaciers.
